January Elite Diver of the Month Alex Shavill
Elite's inaugural diver of the month award goes to Alex Shevill. Alex achieved the award not for his exemplary diving skills (which are very good) nor the impressive answers he gave the CDWS during the ISO interview needed from one of our diving guests but for the unselfishness he showed towards supporting his girlfriend Julie Morgan while she completed her PADI SCUBA diving Course in Sharm El Sheikh during their last holiday in January 2009.Alex had dived with Elite Diving as recently as November 2008 when he did a weeks diving with his long standing school chum Jimmy. This time Alex decided to bring his Girlfriend Julie to meet the team at Elite but said he wouldn't be diving as much as last time as he wanted to spend time relaxing with his girlfriend Julie, as she wasn't a diver and wasn't even that keen on having a try.
Julie did give it a try and enrolled on discover course that gives you a lesson on the basic physics of diving, a session going through some safety drills and skills in confined shallow water and a dive in open water to 12 meters.
Julie showed enormous guts and determination as it was obvious that she wasn't comfortable in the water and even during the briefing of the skills on dry land was pulling faces as if to say
"I'm not doing that"
She didn't though and she worked away at overcoming her nerves and got through the basic skill session. The rest is history.
After completing the course and walking back up the beach after her final qualifying dive, she was greeted by Alex with open arms saying "Well done but it's not fair, as you've dived more than I have"
Maybe Jimmy will now be in second place as a dive buddy??????? Sorry Jimmy!
