Shark Week
Bookings are building up for our two Shark weeks during June 14th for one week and June 27th for one week. For more details e:mail info@elite-diving.com
This photo of a schooling Hammerheads were taken during last years Shark Week This week we spotted another Grey Reef Shark in one of the dive site we often see them. This is off the normal guided route. Also had a white tip reef shark who was swimming at Ras Um Sid around 15 meter ‘s and swam back and forth passed us twice. This is unusual as the sharks don’t like the noise of the boats overhead (or so we thought).

Elite Sports People.
We recently had a very interesting group of friends with high levels of performances in their other chosen sports, diving with us in Sharm El Sheikh. From Letf to right: Jenifer Taylor, Shelly Wilson and Chris Sherring. They all have a claim to fame in their other chosen activities. Jennifer is a British Ridden 2008 equestrian Champion. Shelly (Don’t argue with her!) is a Women’s Tai Boxing Southern area Champion. Chris is a CB500 super Bike Champion and a senior coach for The California Super Bike School.
They are all now PADI advanced divers and had much fun acquiring the grade.

100th Dive

Yet another mile stone was achieved this month when Martin Fisher reached his 100th dive while diving with elite diving in Sharm El Sheikh. Martin is pictured here on his 101st dive swimming over the propeller on The Dunraven. As he kept his achievement quiet we weren’t given the opportunity to present Martin with his certificate underwater on his 100th, however Martin was presented later in the week with a certificate to denote his 100th dive. April Diver Of The Month
This award gives us more deliberation than any other subject matter between the dive center staff!!!! The two runners up for this award in April go to two of our youngest students during. George Amos a 10 year old who showed determination and maturity to complete his PADI SCUBA course and soon will catch up with the rest of his diving family we’re sure. Also another Junior, 14 year old Tom Yamin-Ali who also achieved his PADI SCUBA certificate and did several dives to a very high standard. Aprils top award goes to the other end of the scale and this divers skills were exemplary, but you’d expect that from a BSAC Advanced Instructor and Trimix diver who has dived for decades and has logged in excess of 1000 dives. But this is not why the award was given. This diver last visited Sharm in 1994 and with all the dives he has done all over the world he still showed raw enthusiasm for his diving here and if it wasn’t for the fact that he was also on a family holiday we’re sure he would have dived for the full 14 day trip. Congratulations to Our April Diver of the Month, Richard Greenwood of Yorkshire, who’s obvious love and enthusiasm of the sport is passed on to others around him. Well done Rich’.

Shark Week
June 14th for one week and June 27th for one week. As promised we are dedicating a week to spotting Sharks in Sharm. We'd like to thank our sponsors of Shark Week "STUDIO 808" who is also responsible for our web design and e-marketing and will be represented on one of the shark weeks by Greg and James. There are a few dive sites where we can see them and we will be doing our best to get our divers in front of some of these creatures as our main objective of Shark Week. There will also be a talk on Sharks from Dr Tina Gauer who is a marine biologist and also from our own Shark follower Alun with accounts of his own sightings in Sharm and on Our South African Shark Tour where he will show actual DVD footage of our divers diving with Tiger Sharks and in the cage with Great Whites. We have had much experience in finding sharks here in Sharm as a result of the knowledge our experienced guides have built up over the years. They know how to read the currents and tide to their advantage for the best chance of a sighting. Last week The Count had 3 grey reefs, an eagle ray and a 4 meter guitar shark all on the same dive. We do admit the guitar shark is a chance sighting as it’s not territorial as reef sharks or the Hammerheads. We also have had a few Hammerhead sightings which tells us they will soon be back schooling in their regular location on certain times of the tide. We have two weeks put aside dedicated to Shark week. First is from June the 14th and the second is from June 27th. These dates are chosen as this is when we have experienced most sightings of shark in previous years. However we will still be on the lookout for them when the conditions are right. The Gohst of Sharm
With the thousands of divers visiting Sharm each year, there’s not many of them have had a Ghostly encounter. In our last newsletter issue there was a little article on “The Count” and his spotting of small creatures. Well he’s done it again. During a shore dive where the main objective was to find small critters to photograph, he stumbled over one of the most sought after small creatures in the Red Sea. The Ornate Ghost Pipe Fish. Now any guide can find you anthias, angelfish, blue spotted stingrays and gets no problem in Finding Nemo, but an Ornate Ghost Pipe Fish is one hell of a find. Although it was a marvelous spot and especially on a day when only photography was on the agenda, disaster struck when the camera flooded. Mark, the diver who’s camera flooded, was distraught. Not only as his camera was ruined, but also as he lost a special opportunity to capture the elusive Ghost of Sharm, as Mark was due to fly home the next day, he never got the opportunity to get that elusive shot! The next day, three of us (staff) decided to revisit the spot to see if we could get a picture. You can see how rare this find is as three staff went diving on their day off to photograph the Ghost. It’s also in a very accessible area where many training dives take place so we wonder how many hundreds of divers have swam over this creature in the past not knowing what a rare opportunity they have to experience the beauty of the Ghost. To our disappointment the Ghost had vanished, not to been seen anywhere. We stayed underwater for 72 minutes looking in the area for this elusive Ghost, and it lived up to its name. Is that’s why they call it a Ghost? We assessed the situation and decided two things could have happened. 1st, It may move to a different location at different times of the day as we were later in the day diving at that spot than the dive the day previously. 2nd Something may have eaten it!! We hoped it was not the later, so we decided to go to the same spot the next day but at the same time when The Count and Mark spotted it. Bingo. There it was, in the same place (roughly) as it was spotted two days previously. We managed to get some good shots of it as it is quite a little poser considering its name.
When we were around the area taking time lining the Ghost up for our shots, taking turns with our cameras, a cornet fish came in to investigate what we were looking at. These are extremely predatory fish and often use us for their own stealth when hunting. The last thing we wanted was to draw attention to the Ghost and give his location away so we moved away and started photographing anything and nothing and the cornet fish soon lost interest and moved on. This particular Ghost pipe fish is a fair size compared to some we have seen, so he’s survived a good few season we think. Long may he do so.

February Diver Of The Month
If February has anything to go by, it’s not going to be an easy task each month sifting through the applicants for an ultimate monthly winner. February’s candidates were buddy team Gary and Merv for their hilarious wit & banter and keeping everyone entertained on and off the boat and also for bringing re breather diving to Elite Diving. There was also Sam Richards who’s diving skills and confidence rocketed very quickly and went from shore diving to diving into the bowels of the world famous world war two wreck SS Thistlegorm within a few days. In the end we had to settle on a winner and February it went to Mary Wood who came to Sharm El Sheikh on her own to try as much as she possibly could but never thought in her wildest dreams that she would be going home a qualified SCUBA diver after completing her SCUBA diving lessons.
Mary won this month’s award as she overcame a massive personal hurdle. Mary firstly enrolled on a Discover SCUBA session at Sharks Bay, where you get to learn first step theory and in water basic skills and a dive to open water. She admitted she found she was far more nervous than she though she would be and this initially held her back. Her nervousness was obvious but also was her determination not to let it get the better of her. She benefited form one to one tuition and eventually overcame all her fears to achieve the SCUBA Diver certificate. She even did a day boat diving after completing her course, where she dived the World famous Ras Um Sid headland on a drift dive.
Mary comes form Hamilton in Scotland. She could be a descendant of William Wallace with the grit and determination she showed!!!!
Well done Mary. (AKN Mary Queen of Scotts!!) Labels: Diving Ras Um Sid, SCUBA Course Sharks Bay. Diving Lessons, Sharm El Sheikh

January Elite Diver of the Month Alex Shavill
Elite's inaugural diver of the month award goes to Alex Shevill. Alex achieved the award not for his exemplary diving skills (which are very good) nor the impressive answers he gave the CDWS during the ISO interview needed from one of our diving guests but for the unselfishness he showed towards supporting his girlfriend Julie Morgan while she completed her PADI SCUBA diving Course in Sharm El Sheikh during their last holiday in January 2009. Alex had dived with Elite Diving as recently as November 2008 when he did a weeks diving with his long standing school chum Jimmy. This time Alex decided to bring his Girlfriend Julie to meet the team at Elite but said he wouldn't be diving as much as last time as he wanted to spend time relaxing with his girlfriend Julie, as she wasn't a diver and wasn't even that keen on having a try. Julie did give it a try and enrolled on discover course that gives you a lesson on the basic physics of diving, a session going through some safety drills and skills in confined shallow water and a dive in open water to 12 meters. Julie showed enormous guts and determination as it was obvious that she wasn't comfortable in the water and even during the briefing of the skills on dry land was pulling faces as if to say "I'm not doing that" She didn't though and she worked away at overcoming her nerves and got through the basic skill session. The rest is history. After completing the course and walking back up the beach after her final qualifying dive, she was greeted by Alex with open arms saying "Well done but it's not fair, as you've dived more than I have" Maybe Jimmy will now be in second place as a dive buddy???????
